June: warm and damp

June feels sticky in Nara. Highs reach 26°C, and rain falls on 15 days on average. The rainy season brings cloudy skies and damp paths through Nara Park. You can still visit the Great Buddha at Tōdai-ji or explore the covered arcade on Higashimuki Street when showers arrive.

Long walks around the park are less pleasant after heavy rain. Paths can get muddy, and humid afternoons make outdoor sightseeing tiring. Save a flexible indoor stop for wet spells, rather than counting on clear views from Mount Wakakusa.

Quiet days between showers

June is summer, but it's usually calmer than November, Nara's best-known month for autumn colour. You'll often find fewer visitors at Nara Park and the temples than during the autumn peak. Prices can be gentler than in busier months, though they vary by hotel and date.

Families with young children may prefer shorter park visits, with Tōdai-ji's Great Buddha Hall as a rainy-day anchor. There's no national public holiday in Japan during June, so the month doesn't bring a holiday rush. Still, weekends can draw day-trippers from Osaka and Kyoto.

Make rain part of the plan

June is wetter than May, and July is hotter, with slightly more rain. The combination of humidity and showers can make a full day outside feel draining. Keep Nara's compact sights in mind: you can pair Tōdai-ji with nearby Nara National Museum, then retreat to Higashimuki for a meal.

A local tip: deer crackers are sold around Nara Park, but don't tease the deer with them. Put them away if you're not ready to feed one. On a wet day, take a break over kakinoha-zushi, sushi wrapped in persimmon leaves, at a shop near Kintetsu Nara Station.
