Spring and autumn: the sweet spots

November is our top pick, and it's easy to see why. Days are mild at around 16°C, rain is lighter than most of the year, and the maple leaves turn red around Nara Park and Kasuga Taisha shrine. The deer wander through it all. Expect crowds on weekends, especially around Todai-ji temple, so go on a weekday if you can.

April is the other good month. It's warm enough for a T-shirt at midday, though evenings still feel cool. Cherry blossom usually peaks in early April, and Nara Park fills up fast. Late March into April is busy with school-holiday visitors from across Japan. If you hate crowds, try the quieter paths up toward Wakakusa-yama hill, where the grass is open and the views are wide.

Summer: hot, wet and sticky

June to September all rate Poor, and that's fair. June and July bring the rainy season, with rain on 15 to 17 days a month. August is the hottest month at 31°C, with warm nights of 23°C. September stays wet too, and typhoon season can bring heavy rain.

Is it worth going anyway? Maybe, if you pick your moment. Nara is small, so you can do a temple in the morning and cool off in a museum or arcade café by noon. On 15 August, Nara Tōkae lights thousands of candles across the park at dusk. It's the best reason to come in high summer, and the evening air is a little kinder. Hotels can be cheaper outside the mid-August Obon holiday, when many Japanese families travel.

Winter and early spring: quiet and crisp

December to February are cold, with lows near freezing in January and February. But skies are drier than in summer, and the temples feel calm. You'll often have Todai-ji's Great Buddha Hall with far fewer people. Travelling in winter? Take hot tea or a bowl of kakinoha-zushi, sushi wrapped in persimmon leaf, a local favourite.

Early in the year has a few events worth knowing. On 3 February, Kasuga Taisha's Setsubun Mantōro festival lights its hundreds of lanterns. In mid-January, Wakakusa Yamayaki sets the hillside on fire with fireworks. March is still chilly and gets wetter, with 11 rainy days, so treat it as a shoulder month. It's a good time for slow temple visits before the spring rush.
