August: hot and sticky

Nara's August days feel heavy, with highs around 31°C and humidity at 83%. Rain falls on many days, often in brief, strong showers, so outdoor plans can get interrupted. The month is hot, wet and cloudy, not an easy time for long walks.

You can still visit Tōdai-ji's Great Buddha Hall, where you'll spend time indoors, or explore Naramachi's old streets between showers. Save a long wander through Nara Park for cooler parts of the day, and don't count on a comfortable hike up Mount Wakakusa.

Lanterns and holiday travel

Nara Tōkae, usually held in early August, fills Nara Park and nearby temples with candlelit lanterns. It's a lovely evening event, but the heat can linger after dark. Obon, the mid-August holiday when many people return to family homes, also brings extra domestic travel.

Families with young children may find the lanterns a better fit than a hot afternoon crossing the park.

Crowds and a local tip

August is generally quieter than November, Nara's most popular month, but Obon can make trains and accommodation busier. Prices may rise around the holiday, while other August dates are often less in demand than autumn's peak.

Use the covered shopping streets near Kintetsu Nara Station as a rainy-day route toward Naramachi. You can duck into a café when a shower hits, then try kakinoha-zushi, sushi wrapped in persimmon leaves, at a local shop.
