May feels pleasantly warm for walking, with mild evenings and longer days. It's warmer than April, but June brings more heat and rain. Showers can interrupt a visit, so keep flexible plans for Nara Park and Todai-ji, where you can duck indoors to see the Great Buddha.

The weather also suits a stroll through Isuien Garden or the forest path to Kasuga Taisha. Skip a long exposed walk across the park during a rainy spell; wet paths and deer can make moving around less comfortable. May has frequent rain, though it isn't as wet as June.

Holidays and crowds

Golden Week, a cluster of national holidays around late April and early May, brings many Japanese visitors to Nara. A local tip

At Nara Park, the deer are used to visitors, but they can crowd around when they spot shika senbei, the special deer crackers sold nearby. Buy a small amount, feed the deer calmly, and keep food out of sight when you're not using it. You'll avoid drawing a whole group around you.

For a quieter break, walk from the park toward Kasuga Taisha's forest approach. The shaded route feels cooler than the open lawns, especially after a warm afternoon or a passing shower.
