Mild days for exploring

May feels like spring turning warm. Afternoons are pleasant for walking around Osaka Castle Park or browsing the shops in Shinsaibashi, while evenings can feel cool. Rain comes in spells, so keep indoor stops like the Osaka Museum of History in mind.

The days are long, but cloud and showers can interrupt plans. May is a good time for a river cruise on the Okawa or a stroll through Dotonbori. Save a full day at Universal Studios Japan for a drier forecast if you can; rain can make outdoor rides less appealing.

Golden Week crowds

Golden Week brings several Japanese public holidays in early May, including Children's Day. Many residents travel, and popular sights, trains and hotels can feel packed. Prices often rise around this holiday compared with quieter parts of the month.

If you hate crowds, visit after Golden Week. Osaka is still popular in spring, but the city tends to feel less squeezed than during the holiday rush. June is wetter, while May is less rainy than June, so it's a useful month for mixing city walks with indoor plans.

Small local pleasures

Mid-May is a lovely time to see roses at Nakanoshima Rose Garden, between the Dojima and Tosabori rivers. It's an easy pause between sightseeing stops, and the riverside paths are pleasant when the weather stays dry.
