January weather

January is Osaka's coldest month, with daytime highs around 8°C and lows near freezing. The air can feel damp, and grey skies are common, though rain usually comes on only a handful of days. Short daylight hours make late afternoons feel chilly.

It's a good month for Osaka Castle, the Osaka Museum of History and warm bowls of kitsune udon, a noodle soup topped with sweet fried tofu. Outdoor sightseeing works best when you're happy to duck inside for a break. Save long strolls along the river for brighter parts of the day, and don't expect beach weather.

New Year traditions

The first days of January bring hatsumode, the year's first shrine visit. Sumiyoshi Taisha draws large crowds, and Imamiya Ebisu Shrine gets especially busy for Toka Ebisu, a festival where people pray for good business. Many shops and restaurants close around New Year, so some streets feel quieter than usual.

Travelling with kids? The Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan is a handy indoor stop when the wind picks up.

Crowds and costs

The New Year holiday is a busy time for shrines and domestic travel. After it passes, January is generally quieter than spring and autumn, and accommodation can be better value than in peak months. The Toka Ebisu festival brings a local rush, but it's not the same as the citywide crowds of cherry blossom season.

If you hate crowds, visit Sumiyoshi Taisha after the first few days of the year. For Toka Ebisu, take the Nankai Koya Line to Imamiyaebisu Station; it's close to the shrine and avoids a longer walk from central Namba.
