Osaka feels properly wintry in February. Days reach about 9°C, while nights can drop to 1°C. Rain falls on several days, and the short daylight leaves less time for long outdoor plans. January is a little colder and drier; March is milder but much wetter.

The cool weather suits Osaka Castle Museum, the covered shops around Shinsaibashi and long lunches of steaming takoyaki. But the castle grounds and riverside walks can feel chilly, especially after dark. Save a full day outdoors for a brighter spell.

Events and crowds

Setsubun, usually held around February 3, brings bean-throwing rituals to Osaka Tenmangu Shrine. It's a lively local tradition, and crowds gather for the ceremony. Plum blossoms may also begin appearing at Osaka Castle Park toward the end of the month, though timing varies.

If you hate crowds, February is generally calmer than cherry blossom season and autumn, Osaka's busiest travel periods. Prices for stays can be lower than during those peak months, though weekends and Japanese public holidays can still draw visitors. National Foundation Day and the Emperor's Birthday fall in February, so expect more local travel around those holidays.

Make the most of a cold day

Travelling with kids? Mix outdoor sightseeing with a warm indoor stop, rather than spending the whole day on Osaka Castle's exposed grounds.

A handy cold-weather route is Namba Walk, the underground shopping street linking areas around Namba Station. You can browse shops and grab a meal without walking outside between stops. For dinner, try a takoyaki stand in Dotonbori, where the hot, octopus-filled batter makes a cosy end to a chilly evening.
