Visiting Osaka in July
July feels hot and sticky
Osaka's July days are hot, and the humidity makes walking feel tiring. Highs reach 30°C, with warm nights around 23°C. Rain is frequent, too: the month gets 234 mm over 17 days, often in heavy showers.
Plan indoor stops for the stickiest part of the day. Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan and the shops around Namba work well when the heat or rain sets in. Save long walks through Osaka Castle Park for a cooler spell, and don't count on a dry beach day.
Festival crowds and summer breaks
Tenjin Matsuri takes place on July 24 and 25. It's one of Japan's major festivals, with a land procession and boats on the Okawa River; fireworks light up the evening on the 25th. Expect packed streets near the river and busy trains.
Marine Day is a July public holiday, and school holidays start later in the month. Compared with November and cherry-blossom season, July is often quieter overall, but festival days and late-July breaks can push up hotel prices. If you hate crowds, avoid the riverfront during the festival procession.
Make the most of Tenjin Matsuri
For the festival, use Osaka Tenmangu Station or Minami-morimachi Station for the shrine area. For the river events, Temmabashi is handy, but it gets very crowded. Follow station staff's directions rather than trying to cross the procession route.
Travelling with kids? The hot, damp evenings can be tiring, so watch the fireworks from farther along the Okawa rather than squeezing into the busiest riverfront spots. A covered arcade such as Tenjinbashisuji also makes a useful rainy-day detour.
