Visiting Sendai in August
Sticky summer days
August in Sendai feels warm, humid and often cloudy. Daytime highs reach 29°C, while evenings cool to around 20°C. Rain falls on 16 days, so a sunny morning can turn damp by afternoon. Outdoor sightseeing can feel tiring in the sticky air, and long hikes are less appealing when showers threaten.
You'll still find plenty to do between showers. Explore the covered shops around Sendai Station, or visit the Sendai City Museum for a break from the weather. Matsushima Bay makes a lovely outing, but keep your plans flexible if the forecast looks wet.
Tanabata and Obon
Sendai's Tanabata Festival runs from August 6 to 8. Huge paper streamers hang over the downtown shopping streets, especially around Ichibancho and Chuo-dori. It's a striking time to visit, but the centre gets crowded. Arrive before the busiest afternoon hours if you want room to admire the decorations.
Obon, a family holiday honouring ancestors, also falls in August. Many people travel home, so trains and hotels can fill up around the holiday. If you hate crowds, May is a calmer choice and is Sendai's best month overall.
Crowds and local tips
August is a busy summer month, with higher hotel and transport prices than quieter periods. Tanabata and Obon add extra demand, so don't expect the same easy deals you might find outside summer. The weather is also less comfortable for long days outside than in May.
Travelling with kids? Take a break from the heat at Sendai Uminomori Aquarium, then head back into the city when the rain eases. For Tanabata, use Sendai Station as your starting point: the main displays are an easy walk away, and you can duck into nearby arcades if a shower starts.
