Sendai Weather in April

Cool, changeable spring

April in Sendai feels like spring, but it's not reliably warm. Afternoons reach about 14°C, while mornings and evenings can dip to 3°C. Rain falls on around 13 days, and cloudy skies are common, so expect damp spells between brighter breaks. March is just as wet, while May is warmer.

You can enjoy the city's sights on foot, including Zuihoden Mausoleum and the covered shopping streets around Ichibancho. Cherry blossoms usually bring a lovely reason to stroll Tsutsujigaoka Park. Save long outdoor plans for a dry spell, and don't count on a comfortable day at the coast.

Blossoms and holiday crowds

Cherry blossom season is the main draw. Tsutsujigaoka Park is a popular spot, so it gets busy when the trees are in bloom. The exact timing shifts with the weather. Late April also brings Showa Day, the start of Japan's Golden Week holiday period, when domestic travel picks up.

If you hate crowds, visit the park on a weekday or go before the busiest blossom days. April feels busier than March around the main sakura spots, and rooms can cost more near peak bloom and Golden Week. It's not as warm as May, but blossom season makes it a popular time to visit.

Make the most of a cool day

A rainy afternoon suits Sendai's covered arcades, where you can browse near Aoba-dori without being out in the weather. Try gyutan, grilled beef tongue, a Sendai speciality, at a restaurant around Sendai Station.

Travelling with kids? Tsutsujigaoka Park gives them space to move, but muddy paths can be less fun after rain. For a blossom walk, check the park's paths before setting out, then head back towards the station for a warm meal.
