Visiting Krabi in May
May: hot and rainy
May feels sticky from morning onwards. The high reaches 30°C, and humidity sits at 84%. Rain falls on 28 days, often in heavy showers, while cloud cover leaves little sunshine. You'll still get daylight for outings, but beach days can be interrupted and the sea may turn rough.
Short visits to Wat Tham Suea, the Tiger Cave Temple, can work between showers. But its steep stair climb feels harder in the heat and damp. Keep plans flexible, and don't count on clear views from the top. May isn't a good month to build your trip around long boat trips or snorkelling.
Quiet beaches, changeable boats
If you hate crowds, May is calmer than the peak months around December to February. It's the start of the wetter, quieter season, so accommodation and tours may cost less than in high season. Some island trips run less often or stop when the sea is rough, so check locally before setting out.
The longtail boats from Ao Nang to Railay are useful for a short outing, but crossings can be choppy. Ask the boat operators about conditions before paying, and keep a flexible return plan. Railay's limestone cliffs and walking paths are still worth seeing in a dry spell.
Holidays and local plans
Labour Day and Coronation Day fall in May in Thailand. Visakha Bucha, an important Buddhist holiday, can also fall in May, though its date changes each year. Temples may be busier, and alcohol sales can be restricted on Buddhist holidays.
Travelling with kids? Keep a rainy-day option in mind, such as the indoor exhibits at Krabi Contemporary Art Museum in Krabi Town. Ao Nang's beachfront is pleasant for an evening meal when the rain eases, but don't expect a reliable sunset. May's weather is a trade-off: fewer visitors and lower-season deals, but much less dependable beach time than February.
