October weather in Hanzhong

October feels cool and often damp, with daytime highs around 21°C and nights near 11°C. Rain falls on 13 days, and cloudy skies are common, so don't count on long, sunny stretches. The cooler air is comfortable for exploring Hanzhong Museum or walking along the Hanjiang River.

The wet ground can make the stone paths at Shimen Plank Road slippery. Save that visit for a drier day, and don't expect reliable views from nearby hills when clouds hang low. Compared with September, October is much less rainy, but it's still not a reliably dry month.

National Day crowds

China's National Day holiday brings a busy travel week at the start of October. Popular sights and trains can feel crowded then, especially as families travel around the country. Outside the holiday, visitor numbers are usually calmer than during peak holiday weeks, and prices are less likely to rise sharply.

If you hate crowds, visit after the National Day rush. October is autumn, but Hanzhong's best months overall are March and April, and November; the latter is drier but cooler.

What to do and eat

October suits relaxed city walks, museum visits and sampling Hanzhong mianpi, a cool rice-noodle dish served with a tangy, spicy sauce. On a rainy afternoon, find a local mianpi shop rather than squeezing in an exposed walk at Shimen.

Travelling with kids? Keep the Hanjiang riverside walk flexible; cloudy, wet weather can make an indoor stop at Hanzhong Museum a better fit. If you're visiting Shimen Plank Road, ask locally about trail conditions after rain, since the old stone route can be slick underfoot.
