When to go to Hanzhong: a seasonal guide
March to April: rapeseed and mild days
Spring is the best time to come, and it's the reason Hanzhong is famous. The basin around the city fills with yellow rapeseed (canola) flowers, usually from mid-March into early April. You can walk or cycle between fields with hills behind them. Villages near Hanzhong's Hantai district and the Hanjiang river plains are popular for this.
March is cool, with highs around 18°C and rain on about seven days. April warms to 24°C but gets wetter. Showers are short more often than not, and the skies stay soft and hazy rather than bright. Photographers love it. If you want a clear blue backdrop, you may be disappointed.
Weekends in flower season bring day-trippers from Xi'an and Chengdu. Go midweek if you hate crowds.
May to September: warm, wet and sticky
May is still pleasant, with highs near 28°C. After that, summer settles in. June to August are hot and damp, with July the wettest month at 214 mm on 17 days. Nights stay warm, so sleep can feel heavy without air conditioning. September is a little cooler but just as soggy, and it's the greyest month, with under three hours of sun a day.
Is this a bad time to come? Not always. The Qinling Mountains to the north are greener and cooler than the basin, and they make a decent escape from the heat. But heavy rain can slow mountain roads, so keep your plans loose. Summer is also the Chinese school-holiday season, so family trips cluster in July and August.
October and November: quiet and crisp
Autumn is the second-best window. October is still damp, with rain on 13 days, but it's mild at around 21°C. November is the real prize. It's dry by local standards, with highs near 15°C and cool nights near 5°C. The air feels fresh and the crowds are thin. It's good for walking the city, visiting the Han River banks, and eating the local favourite, Hanzhong mixed noodles (mian pi, cold rice noodles, are the star).
Early November also suits a hike in the nearby hills before winter sets in.
December to February: cold, dry and calm
Winter is cold but not harsh. January highs reach only 8°C and nights dip just below freezing. December is the driest month, with rain on one day. Skies are often grey, and sun is limited. This is low season. Prices and crowds drop, but few visitors come. Chinese New Year, which falls in late January or February, can make travel busy, and some small shops close for a few days.
If you like quiet towns and warm bowls of food, winter works. For flowers and long walks, wait until March.
