March: mild spring days

March feels cool in the mornings and pleasantly mild by afternoon. The high reaches 18°C, but the low is 6°C, so evenings can feel chilly. Rain falls on about seven days, and cloudy skies are common. You'll get some sunshine, though not every day.

It's a good month for exploring Hanzhong's old streets and visiting the Hanzhong Museum without summer heat. The weather also suits walks among the early spring flowers. Skip plans that depend on a clear mountain view if the sky looks grey; clouds can hang around.

Flower season and crowds

March brings the Hanzhong Rapeseed Flower Festival, with yellow fields across the region. Blooming times vary, so some fields may still be coming into colour early in the month. The festival can draw visitors on sunny weekends, especially around popular viewing areas.

If you hate crowds, go on a weekday and explore the fields around Nanzheng rather than joining a busy festival stop. March is busier than the quiet winter months, but it's generally less crowded than April, when the weather is warmer and Qingming brings holiday travel. Prices are often lower than in April, though festival weekends can cost more.

Make the most of your visit

Travelling with kids? A flower-field outing works well when the weather's dry, but keep a city visit in reserve for rainy spells. March gets more rain than February, but much less than April, so muddy paths are still possible after showers.

For an easy local tip, ask about the current flower displays around Nanzheng before setting out from central Hanzhong. The rapeseed fields aren't all in one place, and the best stop can change as the flowers open. After a day out, try Hanzhong rice noodles, a local speciality often served with chilli oil.
