June is warm, damp and often grey. Afternoons reach 31°C, and rain falls on 13 days, so sunshine is limited. The hills and rivers around Hanzhong look lush, but wet paths slow down outdoor sightseeing. That rain is the main reason June scores just 4.4 out of 10.

You can still visit the Hanzhong Museum or wander the city between showers. Save longer walks for the clearer spells, and skip exposed trails when the sky looks heavy. If the forecast turns against you, Baoji and Tianshui, about 145 and 205 km away, are both rated Good for June. July is hotter and wetter, so June is a little easier for outdoor plans.

Dragon Boat Festival

The Dragon Boat Festival may fall in June, but the date changes each year, so check before you go. It's a public holiday, and you'll see zongzi, sticky rice parcels wrapped in leaves, around town. Don't assume Hanzhong has a major race or festival programme every year.

If crowds put you off, avoid the holiday itself. The Hanzhong Museum and popular local sights can feel busier when families have time off.

Crowds and local tips

June is generally quieter than July, when the peak summer holiday period usually begins. That means more relaxed sightseeing, and accommodation can cost less than in July. The trade-off is rain and cloud. If comfortable weather is your priority, March to April and November are the better choices.

If you're travelling with kids, keep a rainy-day stop in reserve, such as the Hanzhong Museum. At the Shimen plank road, rain can leave the path slippery, so turn back if it feels unsafe. When you want a quick meal between showers, ask for Hanzhong rice noodles, a local favourite.
