June to August: the dry season
This is the time to come. Rain almost vanishes, with July the driest month at just a few millimetres. Days are warm at around 30°C, and nights cool to about 19°C, so evenings on a terrace feel pleasant. The sky is often grey and hazy rather than bright blue, but you get far more sun than in the rest of the year.
It suits almost any trip. Walk along the Congo River corniche and watch the boats cross to Kinshasa, which sits right across the water. Visit the Basilique Sainte-Anne, with its green tiled roof, and browse the carvings and paintings at the Poto-Poto neighbourhood's art scene. Roads are easier to travel, which matters if you want to head out to the Lefini or Lésio-Louna reserves, home to gorillas and savannah landscapes.
September: the in-between month
September is warmer, with highs near 31°C, and the rains start to creep back. You'll see about 13 wet days, but they're often short. It's a good pick if you want slightly fewer visitors and don't mind a shower. By the end of the month, the dry-season feel is fading.
October to May: the wet months
Two rainy spells shape the rest of the year. The big one runs from October to January, and November is the wettest month at 271 mm. The second runs March to April, with April the wettest of that stretch. February and May are a little drier, but not by much. Rain falls on most days, the air feels thick, and the sun hardly shows. Expect muddy side streets and slow traffic.
Is that a reason to stay away? Not always. If you're here for work, family or a short city stay, you can plan around the downpours, which often come as heavy bursts. Just don't count on far-off trips outside town. Dirt tracks to the reserves can get rough.
Crowds and events
Brazzaville doesn't have a classic tourist high season. Most visitors are business travellers, aid workers and diaspora families, so flights and hotels follow work and school calendars more than the weather. Independence Day on 15 August falls in the dry season and brings parades and parties. The city is also known for its music scene, with rumba and Congolese sounds filling the bars of Bacongo and Poto-Poto, whatever the month.
