February feels hot, sticky, and often grey in Brazzaville. Highs reach 30°C, nights stay warm, and rain falls on most days. You'll also get little sunshine under heavy cloud, so long outdoor visits can leave you tired. Still, February is a bit drier than January and March, which is small comfort when downpours can cut a walk short.

You can still see the Basilique Sainte-Anne between showers or stroll the Congo River riverfront. Keep your plans loose, though. Muddy paths and wet streets make longer walks less appealing, and a full-day trip outside the city is risky if the rain sets in.

What to do

Plan for shorter outings with time indoors, at the Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza Memorial or in a café in Poto-Poto. If you're hoping for a sunny river view, February will likely disappoint you. Travelling with kids? Build in a quiet break during the muggiest part of the day, then head back out when the rain eases.

February has no major festival or national holiday to draw crowds. Some restaurants mark Valentine's Day, but it isn't a citywide event, so don't expect much of a celebration.

Crowds and local tips

Because February is quieter than the drier months, you'll likely find fewer visitors around town. Rates can also be lower, though it depends on the hotel. Ask your hotel about road conditions before crossing town after heavy rain. If you're heading to the riverfront, take a taxi rather than walking through wet streets. Then, when the showers pass, try a bowl of moambe, a Congolese chicken stew, at a local restaurant.
