October: rain returns

October feels hot, sticky and often cloudy. The high reaches 30°C, but humidity and frequent rain can make a day out tiring. Rain falls on 28 days, so showers may interrupt plans even when they don't last all day.

You can still visit the Musée National and browse the paintings at the Poto-Poto School of Painting. Keep outdoor sightseeing flexible, and leave room to pause when rain sets in. Long walks along the Congo River or trips on muddy roads are less appealing in these conditions. September is drier; November is wetter still.

Events and local life

October isn't known for a major annual festival or public holiday in Brazzaville. That makes it a quieter month for cultural events than periods with major festivals, though local performances and exhibitions may still be on.

If you hate crowds, October can suit you: visitor numbers are generally lower than in the dry-season peak from June to August. The trade-off is wet weather, which can make getting around less comfortable. Prices may also be lower than in peak season, but check current rates rather than assuming every hotel or flight is cheaper.

Make your plans flexible

A good October day might mean visiting Sainte-Anne du Congo Basilica, then taking a taxi to Poto-Poto rather than walking between sights in the rain. For a meal, try saka-saka, cassava leaves cooked with palm oil, at a local restaurant.

Travelling with kids? Keep an indoor stop in reserve, since showers are common and the cloud cover limits sunny breaks. If you're set on beaches, consider Pointe-Noire instead; it has better weather this month.
