December: warm, wet and a tough month to plan around

December stays warm, with afternoons around 29°C and nights near 22°C. But rain falls on most days, and the air feels sticky. Skies are often cloudy, so don't count on long sunny stretches. That mix is why December scores only 2.9 out of 10, mainly because of the rain. If your dates are flexible, June to August is much the better choice. Luanda and Yaoundé also have better weather this month, if you're open to a side trip.

You can still visit the Basilique Sainte-Anne or browse the Poto-Poto art market between showers. The Congo River waterfront is worth a look, but heavy rain can make walks muddy and river views hazy. So save long outdoor plans for a dry spell, and try not to rely on a full day of sightseeing without interruptions.

Christmas in the city

If you do land in town over the holidays, you'll find Christmas is celebrated with church services and family gatherings. The city may feel more festive around Christmas and New Year, though public celebrations can vary from year to year. Still, December isn't known as the city's main festival season.

That also means it sits outside the main visitor season. June to August is the more popular stretch for good weather, so you'll likely find fewer travellers in December. If crowds bother you, the first half of the month may feel calmer than the holiday period. Prices aren't reliably lower across the board, though, and Christmas travel can still affect flights and places to stay.

Make rain part of the plan

Travelling with kids? Keep a flexible day for indoor stops, such as the National Museum of the Congo, and leave room for rain delays. December is wetter than January but drier than November. With rain on 28 days, a shower can interrupt even a short trip across town.

For a practical fix, ask your hotel about current road conditions before heading to the riverfront near the rapids, since downpours can make access awkward. And if the weather clears, enjoy the river views, then settle in for a plate of saka-saka, cassava leaves cooked with palm oil.
