December is hot, very humid and often cloudy in Pointe-Noire. Rain falls on many days, so expect damp streets and sudden showers rather than long stretches of sunshine. The sea air can feel sticky, even when the temperature doesn't change much between day and night.

You can still explore the city, visit the market or enjoy grilled fish near the coast between showers. But December isn't a reliable month for long beach days or clear views. At Côte Sauvage, check the conditions before swimming, and expect wet, slippery paths after rain.

What to do

Keep plans flexible. A meal of fresh fish in the city or a short visit to the cathedral can work well when the sky turns grey. Save trips to Diosso Gorge for a drier spell; rain can make the paths muddy.

If you hate crowds, December may suit you better than the June-to-September dry season, though holiday dates can be busier. Travelling with kids? Leave room for indoor breaks when showers interrupt a trip to the beach.

Christmas and New Year bring local celebrations, but don't expect a major December festival that draws visitors from far away. One local tip: ask about road conditions before heading to Diosso Gorge, north of Pointe-Noire. Heavy rain can make the approach difficult, so a coastal outing closer to town may be the easier choice that day.
