Best Time to Visit Luanda
Angola · weather by month, temperature and rainfall
Weather-wise, June to October is the best time to visit Luanda. Temperatures barely change through the year: highs stay between 25°C and 31°C, so rainfall matters far more than heat when choosing when to go. Rain is heaviest in April, at about 77 mm (3.0 in), and lightest in July, at 0 mm (0.0 in).
When to go to Luanda: a seasonal guide
Two seasons: cacazo and the rest
Luanda has a cool, dry season and a hot, wetter one. The dry season runs roughly from May to September. Locals call it cacazo (a cool, grey-skied time when the cold Benguela Current cools the coast). It's the most comfortable stretch of the year.
From October to April, it's warm and sticky. Nights stay around 25°C or higher, and afternoons feel heavy. Rain doesn't come as a steady drizzle. It arrives in short, hard bursts, and the city's drainage struggles. Streets in low-lying areas can flood.
Which months suit which trip
June to August is the easiest time for city walking. July is completely dry, and June and August are close to it. Highs sit in the mid-20s and nights are cool. You can climb up to the Fortaleza de São Miguel, an old Portuguese fort above the bay, without melting. Wander the Ilha do Cabo seafront, where locals eat grilled fish at beach shacks. Add the Museu Nacional de História Natural or a stroll along Marginal, the palm-lined waterfront road.
September and October are good for beach days. Mussulo, a long sandbar island you reach by boat, is warmer and brighter then. October is the best of the transition months, but the rain starts to creep back.
March and April are the hardest. They're the wettest months, with rain on 14 days each and humidity above 80% in April. If you must go, plan indoor stops and expect traffic to crawl after storms.
January and February are hot but drier than March. They suit you if you don't mind heat and want fewer visitors.
Crowds and events
Luanda isn't a classic holiday-crowd city. Most visitors come for business or to see family, so hotels fill with work travel more than school breaks. Dry-season months tend to be the busiest and priciest for rooms. The wet months are quieter.
Carnival is the big date. It falls in February or March, depending on Easter, and samba-style parades fill the streets with costumes and drums. It's loud, packed and joyful, so book a hotel close to the route. Expect heat and the odd downpour.
Independence Day on 11 November brings parades and ceremonies. Late in the dry season, Luanda also hosts music events, including jazz and kizomba nights, but dates change, so check locally.
