Best Time to Visit Kinshasa
Democratic Republic of the Congo · weather by month, temperature and rainfall
If you want the most pleasant weather in Kinshasa, plan your trip for June to August. Temperatures barely change through the year: highs stay between 29°C and 31°C, so rainfall matters far more than heat when choosing when to go. The rainy season runs over October to April; November is the wettest month with about 308 mm (12.1 in) of rain. April is the least comfortable month, mainly because of the rain.
When to go to Kinshasa: a seasonal guide
June to August: the dry season
This is the best time to come, and it's not close. Rain nearly disappears, with July the driest month at just 1 rainy day. Skies are often hazy or grey, but you get several hours of sun most days. Evenings are cooler, with July the coolest at a low of 19°C.
It suits almost any trip. You can walk the markets and wander Gombe, the central district with embassies and the river boulevard. You can also cross the Congo River to Brazzaville if you've sorted visas. Roads stay passable, which matters in a city where heavy rain can flood streets fast. The Lola ya Bonobo sanctuary, a bonobo rescue centre on the edge of town, is much easier to reach when tracks are dry.
September: the in-between month
September is warm and fairly dry, but the rain starts creeping back. You'll get about 16 wet days, usually short bursts rather than all-day downpours. It's a good pick if you want to dodge the peak dry months without taking a big risk. August and September are the hottest months, with highs of 31°C, though humidity is lower than at other times.
October to May: the rainy season
Be honest with yourself about this stretch. From October to April it rains on almost every day, and November is the wettest month at 308 mm. Afternoons feel heavy and sticky, and humidity stays above 80% for most of it. Storms can turn roads into rivers, and traffic on Boulevard du 30 Juin, the main avenue through Gombe, gets worse.
May is a slight easing. Rain drops and sun creeps up, but it still rates Poor. If you must travel in the wet months, stay flexible and keep outdoor plans to mornings.
Crowds, events and timing
Kinshasa isn't a classic tourist city, so there's no true high season in the beach-resort sense. Most visitors come for work, family, or music. Flights and hotels can still tighten around business trips and the dry months. Independence Day on 30 June is a national holiday, and it falls right in the best weather. Expect parades, closed offices and busier streets around Gombe.
Music is the big draw all year. Rumba and soukous, the city's dance-ready guitar sounds, fill open-air bars in Matonge and Bandalungwa most weekends. Dry nights make those outings far more pleasant. Not sure when to go? Aim for July.
