Best Time to Visit Kananga

The dry season: June to July

If you want the easiest weather, aim for these two months. Rain almost disappears, with just 5 mm in each, and the air feels noticeably drier. Mornings are cooler, with lows around 19°C. Afternoons get hot, up to 34°C in July, so you'll want a long lunch in the shade.

This is the best time for getting around. Dirt roads around Kananga, the main city of Kasai-Central, are firmer and less likely to turn to mud. Day trips to nearby villages and markets are far more realistic. Dust can build up on the roads, though, so a trip by motorbike taxi can leave you grubby.

May and August: the edges

May scores best of all on our comfort rating. The rains have mostly gone, but you still get some showers on about ten days. It feels softer and greener than July. Humidity is down to 70%, which is a real relief after the wet months.

August is the awkward one. It's still the hottest month alongside July, but the rain starts creeping back. You'll see 57 mm and showers on about eight days. It's fine for a trip, just less predictable.

The wet season: September to April

September is where the rain returns for good, and it stays until spring. From October to March, nearly every second day brings rain, and November and December see it on 24 days each. Sunshine drops to under two hours a day in December. Humidity sits above 80%, so afternoons feel sticky and clothes dry slowly.

Is it worth going then? Only if you have to, for work, family or a mission. Roads can be slow and flights may be delayed. Plan for slow days indoors. January to April is slightly easier, with rain easing from 149 mm to 117 mm, but it's still a poor time for sightseeing.

Crowds and events

Kananga doesn't have a tourist high season. You won't fight for rooms or queue at sights. Visitors are mostly travelling for work, church or aid projects, and they come all year. Dry months can be busier simply because travel is easier.

Big public holidays, such as Independence Day on 30 June, bring parades and gatherings across the DRC. Ask locals what's planned in town, since local events vary from year to year.
