March heat

March is a warm-up for Ahmedabad's much hotter season. Afternoons can reach 38°C, while evenings cool to around 19°C. The air is usually dry, with little rain, so you're unlikely to lose much sightseeing time to showers.

Visit the Sabarmati Ashram or walk through the old city's pols (traditional housing lanes) in the morning. Save indoor sights and long lunches for the sticky-feeling heat of the afternoon, even though humidity is low. A sunset walk along the Sabarmati Riverfront is more comfortable than a midday stroll.

If you hate heat, December and January are better months for exploring on foot.

Holi and local life

Holi, the spring festival of colours, often falls in March, though its date changes each year. Ahmedabad's celebrations can make streets lively and colourful, but local customs and events vary. Ask your hotel about suitable public celebrations before joining in.

March is generally quieter than the popular winter months, and stays may cost less than in December or January. It's still a useful time for a city break if you focus on mornings, evenings and indoor stops. Don't expect a calm day everywhere during Holi, when some areas may be busy.

Make the most of your day

Plan a morning visit to the Sabarmati Ashram, then take a break indoors during the hottest hours. In the evening, head to Manek Chowk, where the old city's food stalls serve local favourites such as pav bhaji and kulfi. It's a better fit for March than a long afternoon walk.

For a quieter outing, visit the Calico Museum of Textiles, but check its visitor rules before setting out. March's heat can make crossing Ahmedabad on foot tiring, so use an auto-rickshaw between the old city and the riverfront rather than treating them as one continuous walk.
