Mild winter days

December is one of Ahmedabad's best months to visit. Sunny days can reach 30°C, while evenings cool to around 13°C. Rain is rare, so you can explore the old city's pols, the Sabarmati Ashram and the riverfront without worrying much about showers.

The midday sun can still feel warm on long walks. Save the narrow lanes of the old city for morning or late afternoon, then enjoy a relaxed evening meal. Try Gujarati thali at a local restaurant, or take a stroll along the Sabarmati Riverfront after sunset.

December events

Kankaria Carnival usually brings performances and family activities to the lakefront in the last week of December. It's a lively time to visit Kankaria Lake, but expect more people there than on an ordinary evening. Christmas is also marked at Ahmedabad's churches, including the historic St. Xavier's Church in Mirzapur.

If you're visiting for the carnival, check local schedules closer to your trip, as programmes can change. For a quieter outing, the Calico Museum of Textiles is a good fit for a cooler part of the day.

Crowds and local tips

December is high season, alongside January, because the weather is comfortable for sightseeing. It's generally busier, and often pricier, than the hotter months. November is warmer, while January is a little cooler; both are also popular times to visit.

If you hate crowds, visit Kankaria Lake on a weekday rather than during the carnival. At the Sabarmati Ashram, leave time to see the exhibits before walking by the river. The ashram is a quiet contrast to the busy streets nearby.
