Best Time to Visit Ahmedabad

December to February: the sweet spot

Winter is when Ahmedabad is at its best. Days are warm and dry, and nights are cool enough that you'll want a light jacket on a rooftop. December and January score highest, with almost no rain and plenty of sun. February is still pleasant, but afternoons start to heat up.

This is the season for walking the old city. The Heritage Walk starts at the Swaminarayan Temple in Kalupur and winds through the pols, which are tight clusters of old wooden houses. Sabarmati Ashram and the Adalaj stepwell are also easy to enjoy now, without the sweat. It's the busiest time too, so expect more visitors and higher hotel demand.

Around 14 January, Uttarayan, the kite festival, fills the sky above the pols. Rooftops become party spots. Kite strings can be sharp, so be careful on bikes and rickshaws. The Kankaria Carnival usually runs in late December, with music and performances by the lake. Travelling with kids? Both are good fits.

March to June: heat first, then humidity

March is hot, and by May it's fierce. Afternoons reach 44°C, and nights barely cool down. If you hate heat, skip these months. If you can't, spend midday in air-conditioned places like the Calico Museum of Textiles (check opening days first) and go out after dark. Law Garden's night food stalls are lively then.

June is odd. It's still hot, but the first rain arrives and the air turns sticky. The sky is cloudier, and the relief is only partial. Hotels are quietest now, so rooms are easier to find.

July to September: monsoon

The rainy season brings heavy downpours on most days in July and August. July is the wettest month, with sun a rare sight. Humidity is high, and streets near the Sabarmati riverfront can flood briefly. Sightseeing becomes a game of dodging showers.

There's an upside. The city turns green, and crowds are thin. If you like quiet and don't mind getting wet, it can be pleasant for short visits.

October and November: second chance

Rain fades by October, and skies turn bright again. Days are still warm, but the air gets drier through November. Both months rate Good.

This is also festival time. Navratri, usually in September or October, is the big one. Ahmedabad hosts huge garba nights, a circle dance done in bright clothes. Hotels fill up and prices rise. Diwali, usually October or November, lights up the city, with sweets and decorated doorways. If you want atmosphere and can handle some warmth, this is your window.
