When to go to Nashik: a seasonal guide
Winter: November to February
This is the season to come. Days are warm but not harsh, and evenings turn cool. November and December score best, and January is rated Excellent too. February is Good, and it starts to heat up by the end.
It's perfect for walking the ghats (steps down to the river) at Ramkund on the Godavari, and for the cave temples at Pandavleni. You can also visit the vineyards around Nashik, which many people call India's wine country. Harvest and crush season runs through the cooler months, so tours feel lively. Travelling with kids? These months are easy on them. Expect more visitors around Christmas and New Year, so rooms fill up on weekends.
Summer: March to May
It gets hot and dry. April is the toughest, with highs near 39°C and strong sun for about 11 hours a day. May is a little cooler by day but warmer at night, and the first showers start to arrive.
If you hate crowds, this is quiet. But sightseeing is best done in the early morning or after sunset. Spend the middle of the day in a cool café or your hotel. The days are better for short stops than long treks.
Monsoon: June to September
The rain is heavy. July is the wettest month, with 588 mm and rain on 28 days. The sky stays grey, and humidity sits near 90%. Roads can be slow and muddy.
There's an upside. The hills around Trimbakeshwar turn bright green, and waterfalls run full. The trek up Brahmagiri hill near Trimbakeshwar is a favourite, but paths get slippery, so go carefully. Many visitors skip these months, so prices and crowds ease. Wineries mostly stay quiet.
Festivals and crowds
The biggest event is the Kumbh Mela, a huge Hindu pilgrimage held in Nashik roughly every twelve years. Millions come to bathe in the Godavari. Hotels are packed for months, so check when the next one falls before choosing your dates. Outside those years, Maha Shivaratri in February or March draws crowds to Trimbakeshwar Temple, one of the twelve Jyotirlinga shrines (sacred Shiva sites). Diwali, usually in October or November, lights up the old town.
October is a good in-between month. The rain has mostly gone, though it's still humid. It suits you if you want green hills and fewer people.
