When to go to Thane: a seasonal guide

November to January: the sweet spot

This is when Thane is at its best. Days are warm but not harsh, and evenings are cool enough that you'll want a thin jumper by January. Skies are mostly clear and the air feels dry compared with the rest of the year. November and December both score Excellent, and January is Good.

It's the right time for walking round Masunda Talao (also called Talao Pali), the lake in the old town, and for a long afternoon at Upvan Lake with the Yeoor Hills behind it. Hikers should aim for Yeoor, part of Sanjay Gandhi National Park, when the trails are dry. It's also the easiest season for day trips into Mumbai. Winter is the busy time for weddings and for visitors from other cities, so expect fuller trains and hotels.

February to May: hot and getting hotter

February is pleasant in the morning and hot by afternoon. By March the heat is heavy, and April is the hottest month at 40°C. May is almost as warm at night, and the first pre-monsoon showers begin to show up. These months are Poor for sightseeing.

If you come now, plan outdoor time for early morning or after sunset. Spend the middle of the day in a mall such as Viviana or Korum, or in an air-conditioned café. Gudi Padwa, the Marathi New Year, falls in March or April. Thane marks it with a procession through the streets, with people in traditional dress. It's a good reason to visit despite the heat.

June to September: the monsoon

Rain here is serious. July is the wettest month, with 988 mm and rain on all 30 days. Humidity sits near 90% and the sun barely shows. Roads flood, and trains and buses can slow down or stop. Don't plan anything tight.

There's an upside. The hills around Yeoor turn bright green, and waterfalls run. Hikers who don't mind mud will enjoy it, but check conditions before you set off. It's also low season for visitors, so hotels are quieter.

Ganesh Chaturthi, usually in late August or September, is the big event. Neighbourhoods set up decorated pandals (temporary shrines), and the final days bring drumming and processions to the water. Many people visit just for this. Keep your schedule loose.

October: the in-between month

October is a transition month. It still sees 117 mm of rain on 12 days, but the sun returns. Navratri brings evenings of garba dancing, and Diwali often follows in October or November, with lights and sweets across town. Come in late October if you want the festivals and drier weather together.
