Heat shapes the day

May feels hot and sticky in Thane, with highs around 38°C and nights staying warm. April is hotter, but May brings more rain: about three wet days, often with brief showers rather than a washout. June is much wetter, so May can still work for a short city visit.

Keep outdoor sightseeing to cooler parts of the day. Upvan Lake is more pleasant around sunset, while the shaded paths at Yeoor Hills suit a gentle walk. Skip a long midday hike or an afternoon spent crossing town on foot; the heat can make both tiring. Nearby Virar has better weather if you're hoping for more time outdoors.

Holidays and quieter streets

Maharashtra Day falls on May 1, and you may see local celebrations or find some offices closed. May isn't a major peak season for Thane, so you'll generally find fewer visitors than in the cooler months from November to January. Hotels may cost less than during that popular winter period, though rates vary.

If you hate crowds, May can feel calmer at local sights, but the trade-off is the heat. Travelling with kids? Plan a relaxed visit to Upvan rather than a long outdoor day.

Make the heat easier

With poor comfort conditions, May is better for short outings and indoor stops than a packed sightseeing schedule. Save the long walks for another season, and use the afternoon for a break in a cool café or mall. The sun shines for much of the day, so a cloudy spell doesn't always mean a cool one.

For Upvan Lake, take an auto-rickshaw from Thane station rather than walking across town in the heat. Then enjoy the lakefront as the day cools. If you're choosing dates freely, November to January is a more comfortable time to explore Thane.
