When to go to Pimpri-Chinchwad: a seasonal guide

November to January: the sweet spot

This is when Pimpri-Chinchwad is at its easiest. Days are warm but not heavy, and evenings turn cool enough for a light jacket. January is the coolest month, with lows around 13°C. Rain is almost gone, and the air feels dry and clear.

It's the best window for day trips from this Pune-side industrial town. You can walk the old fort at Sinhagad, or visit Lohagad and Visapur forts near Lonavala, without the heat or the mud. Travelling with kids? School holidays around Diwali, usually in October or November, push up prices and crowds on trains and roads toward Pune and Mumbai. December is calmer.

February to May: hot and dry

February is still pleasant and sunny. From March it gets properly hot, and April is the toughest month, with highs of 38°C. May is nearly as hot, and the first pre-monsoon showers start to show up. Afternoons are best spent indoors. Do your sightseeing early or after sunset.

If you hate crowds, this is a quiet time for the city itself. Local families travel during the summer school break, mostly to hill stations, so hotels in town stay easy to get. Pick a day trip with shade or water, such as the Pavana lake area, rather than a fort climb at noon.

June to September: the monsoon

Rain is the main story here. July is the wettest month by far, with rain on every day of the month and almost no sun. June, August and September are also very wet and humid. Roads flood in low spots, and traffic on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway and old highway can crawl.

It isn't all bad. The hills around turn bright green, and waterfalls near Lonavala are at their fullest. If you love moody landscapes and don't mind getting soaked, it can be a good time. Hiking is slippery, though, and some forts get crowded with weekend visitors, so go midweek.

October: the in-between month

October is the shift month. Rain fades, but showers still come on about 12 days. It's humid, with more sun than in the monsoon. Ganesh Chaturthi in late summer is the big local festival, with drum-filled processions and large idols, and Chinchwad is known for its Morya Gosavi temple tied to the festival. Then Diwali lights up the city when the weather turns pleasant.
