January days outdoors

January is one of Ahmedabad's best months for walking around. Afternoons reach 29°C, but mornings and evenings can feel cool, with lows around 12°C. Dry air and clear skies make sightseeing comfortable, and you can spend time outdoors without the sticky heat that arrives later.

Visit the Sabarmati Ashram or explore the old city's pols, its traditional residential lanes, in the cooler parts of the day. The long sunny afternoons also suit a trip to Adalaj Stepwell. Save indoor stops for the evening, when the temperature drops.

Uttarayan and winter crowds

Uttarayan, Ahmedabad's kite festival, falls in January. Around 14 January, rooftops fill with kite flyers and the sky becomes part of the show. The International Kite Festival is also held around this time, with events by the Sabarmati Riverfront in some years.

If you hate crowds, avoid planning your whole visit around Uttarayan. It's a popular winter month, and accommodation can be harder to find around the festival than in hotter months. The days after the event are usually a calmer time to explore.

Travelling with kids? Watching the kites from the Sabarmati Riverfront gives you open space, while rooftop gatherings can feel busy. For a taste of the festival, try fafda and jalebi, a familiar Uttarayan combination sold across the city.

January is also drier than December, with just 1 mm of rain in the data, so rain is unlikely to interrupt an outdoor day. February gets hotter, so January is a good choice if you want to visit stepwells and old-city sights on foot. Keep a warmer layer handy for an evening at Manek Chowk, where food stalls draw a crowd after dark.
