Cool, clear days

December is one of Indore's easiest months for exploring. Afternoons are warm, while mornings and evenings feel cool, especially after the sun goes down. Rain is rare, and the clear skies suit a walk around Rajwada Palace or a visit to Lal Bagh Palace.

You can comfortably spend time outdoors without the sticky heat of summer. Save long walks for the middle of the day, though, and bring something warm for an evening outing. The days are shorter than in summer, so leave time for outdoor sights before dusk.

Food after dark

December brings Christmas and New Year celebrations, but it isn't known for a major citywide festival. You'll find a festive feel around the holidays, with restaurants and shops busier than usual.

For a distinctly Indore evening, head to Sarafa Bazaar, where jewellery shops give way to food stalls after dark. Try poha-jalebi for breakfast, or sample local snacks such as bhutte ka kees, a spiced dish made with grated corn. If you hate crowds, visit Sarafa earlier in the evening rather than at its busiest.

Busy, but comfortable

December falls in Indore's popular November-to-January travel season. Expect more visitors than in the hot or rainy parts of the year, and higher demand for rooms around Christmas and New Year. It's still a good time for sightseeing and food outings; just don't expect holiday-week prices to match quieter months.

Travelling with kids? The pleasant daytime weather makes Rajwada and nearby central Indore easier to explore on foot. For a local practical tip, use a ride to Sarafa rather than trying to park right beside the market; its lanes get crowded once the food stalls open.
