Visiting Indore in May
May feels like peak summer
Indore is seriously hot in May. Afternoons can reach 41°C, and even nights stay warm, around 25°C. The air is fairly dry, with little rain, so the heat can feel relentless as you walk around Rajwada or the central markets.
Keep sightseeing for the cooler parts of the day, then spend the hottest hours somewhere air-conditioned. Sarafa Bazaar works well after dark, when its food stalls open. Try Indore's poha for breakfast or browse the stalls for local snacks at night. Skip long walks and exposed outings in the afternoon; the city's sights are harder to enjoy in that heat.
Events and quieter streets
May 31 is Ahilyabai Holkar's birth anniversary. She ruled from nearby Maheshwar, and her legacy is closely tied to Indore's Holkar history. You may find local commemorations around the date. Buddha Purnima can also fall in May, though its date changes each year.
May is low season for visitors compared with the cooler months from November to January. You'll generally find fewer tourists and better hotel deals, but summer school holidays can bring families to popular sights. If you hate crowds, weekday visits to Rajwada are a calmer choice.
Make the evenings count
May gets 11 hours of sunshine a day, but that doesn't make midday sightseeing comfortable. Plan a relaxed morning around Lal Bagh Palace, then take a long indoor break before heading out again. The monsoon arrives in June, when rain rises sharply, so May is usually easier for dry travel, if much hotter.
For a very Indore evening, take an auto-rickshaw to Sarafa Bazaar after the jewellery shops close. It's a night food market, not a daytime street-food stop. Go hungry, and keep your visit focused on the stalls rather than trying to walk across the city in the heat.
