You can still enjoy a slow meal in a café around Jalan Hanoman, visit the Neka Art Museum, or browse Ubud Palace between showers. Rice-field walks are possible, but paths can turn slippery. Don't count on a dry day for a long trek or a full afternoon at the Tegallalang rice terraces.

Christmas and New Year

Christmas and New Year bring a holiday mood to Ubud, with restaurants and hotels catering to visitors. They're not traditional Balinese festivals, though; local Hindu ceremonies follow a different calendar. Expect more visitors around the holidays than in quieter months, and higher prices for rooms and flights than in the wet-season lull.

If you hate crowds, avoid the busiest holiday stretch and spend your time in quieter streets away from the central market.

The stone steps and paths can be slick, so take them slowly. For a rainy evening, try nasi campur, rice served with small portions of different dishes, at a warung near Jalan Raya Ubud.
