Visiting Ubud in April
April: warm and damp
April feels hot and sticky in Ubud, with humid air and frequent showers. Rain falls on many days, though it's less wet than March. The showers can interrupt a walk through the Campuhan Ridge, but you can often fit in a visit to Ubud Palace or the market between them.
The Tegalalang rice terraces are still lush, but paths can turn muddy. Save longer walks for clearer spells, and don't count on a dry afternoon by the pool. If you hate crowds, April is a more relaxed choice than July to September.
Festivals and holidays
Nyepi, Bali's quiet Hindu New Year, sometimes falls in April, though its date changes each year. On Nyepi, the island shuts down: you can't travel around, and even the airport closes. Ask your Ubud accommodation whether your stay overlaps with it.
Ubud's Bali Spirit Festival is usually held in spring, with yoga, dance and music. Its dates vary, so it may not land in April every year. When it does, expect more visitors around the festival venues.
Crowds and local tips
April sits outside Ubud's busiest stretch, so sights and cafés are generally calmer than in July and August. Rates are often lower than in those peak months, but popular places can still fill up, especially around school holidays and festival dates.
Travelling with kids? Plan a relaxed stop at the Agung Rai Museum of Art when a shower rolls in. For a local meal, try nasi campur—rice served with small portions of different dishes—at a warung, or casual local eatery, near Ubud Market. Check the rice terrace paths before setting off; wet steps can be slippery.
