March weather in Thimphu

March feels like spring in Thimphu, but mornings and evenings stay chilly. Afternoons are mild, and you'll get a mix of cloud, sunshine and occasional rain. Showers fall on several days, so a wet spell can interrupt views from Buddha Dordenma or a walk around the Tashichho Dzong grounds.

There's enough daylight for sightseeing and nearby walks, but don't count on clear mountain views every day. Compared with February, March is warmer and wetter; April brings more rain again. Keep outdoor plans flexible, especially if you're heading beyond the city.

What to do, and what to skip

It's a good month for exploring the National Memorial Chorten, browsing the Centenary Farmers' Market and stopping for ema datshi, a chilli-and-cheese dish, in town. Choose a shorter walk on a damp day rather than a long hike on exposed trails.

Losar, Bhutanese New Year, can fall in March, though its date shifts with the lunar calendar. Paro Tshechu may also take place in March, but it's held in Paro, not Thimphu, and dates vary.

Crowds and local tips

March is generally less busy than October and November, two of Bhutan's most popular months. It can feel calmer in town, though festival days draw visitors to Paro. Prices may be less pressured than during the autumn peak, but don't expect every hotel or tour to be cheaper.

For a handy local stop, visit the Memorial Chorten in the morning, when people gather to walk clockwise around it and spin prayer wheels. Keep to the same direction, and give worshippers room.
