Thimphu Weather in December

December: crisp days, cold nights

Thimphu feels dry and wintry in December. Afternoons reach about 15°C, but nights can drop to 3°C, so the shift is noticeable once the sun goes down. Rain is rare, and clear spells make it a good month for walking around the city and visiting sights such as the National Memorial Chorten.

The short days leave less time for outings beyond town. Buddha Dordenma is worth the trip for its valley views, but its hillside setting can feel cold and exposed. Save longer walks for sunny hours, and avoid planning a full day outdoors after dark.

National Day and quieter streets

Bhutan's National Day falls on December 17. Thimphu's main celebrations are held at Changlimithang Stadium, with official ceremonies and cultural performances. It's a special time to see local pride up close, though the centre may be busier around the event.

If you hate crowds, December is generally quieter than October and November, two of Thimphu's best-known travel months. Winter is a less popular time to visit, so hotels may be easier to find and rates can be lower than in peak months. Prices still vary, and Bhutan's tourism rules apply year-round.

Make the most of the sunshine

Travelling with kids? The mild daytime weather suits short visits to the Memorial Chorten or the Folk Heritage Museum, followed by a warm meal indoors. Try ema datshi, a local chilli-and-cheese dish, if you're happy with a little heat.

A useful local tip: visit Buddha Dordenma in the middle of the day, when the hillside is more comfortable and the views are often clearer. Then head back towards town before evening, when the temperature drops quickly. The Tashichho Dzong is another good late-afternoon stop, but check its visiting hours before you go.
