Visiting Thimphu in May
May: warm, but often wet
Thimphu feels mild in May, with afternoons warmer than April and cool evenings. Rain comes often, and clouds can hang over the valley, so don't count on clear views from Buddha Dordenma. The long daylight helps, but showers can interrupt sightseeing.
You can still visit Tashichho Dzong, browse the weekend market, or stop for ema datshi, a local chilli-and-cheese dish. Keep flexible plans for walks around the city. I'd avoid making a long hike your only big activity; muddy paths and low cloud can spoil the day.
Events and crowds
Buddha Jayanti, also known in Bhutan as Saga Dawa, may fall in May. Its date follows the lunar calendar, so it isn't in May every year. If it does coincide with your visit, you may see people visiting temples and making offerings.
May is generally quieter than October and November, Thimphu's most popular months. You're less likely to meet festival crowds, and stays may cost less than in peak season. Still, rain makes May less appealing for travellers set on mountain views.
If you hate crowds, May can suit you, as long as you're happy to trade some clear skies for quieter streets.
A useful local tip
For a rainy spell, head to the Folk Heritage Museum in Kawajangsa. It's indoors, and its traditional farmhouse gives you a close look at Bhutanese life without relying on a clear forecast.
If you're going to Buddha Dordenma, take a taxi from central Thimphu rather than walking up in wet weather. The hilltop can be cloudy, and the return walk is less pleasant after rain. Keep the statue as a flexible stop, not the one view you're counting on.
