When to visit Bhutan

Thimphu and the rest of Bhutan

Our data covers Thimphu, the capital, so that's our anchor. It sits high in a valley, and it's cooler than the lowlands near the Indian border. Towns like Phuentsholing are hotter and stickier. Eastern areas such as Trashigang are lower and milder than the central valleys. They're also much quieter. Bumthang, in the centre, gets cold in winter, so you'll want a proper jacket there.

October and November: the sweet spot

These are the best months for Thimphu. Skies are usually clear, and the mountain views are at their sharpest. The days feel fresh rather than hot. This is also the busiest time, so expect full hotels and more people at Tiger's Nest (Paro Taktsang), the cliffside monastery near Paro.

Autumn is festival season too. The Thimphu Tshechu, a big monastery dance festival, usually falls around late September or October. The dates follow the Bhutanese lunar calendar, so they move each year. Paro's Tshechu comes in spring.

Summer: green and very wet

June is the hottest month in Thimphu at 24°C. That's warm, not scorching. The real story is the monsoon. July is the wettest month, with 279 mm of rain. Expect cloudy views, muddy paths and the odd landslide closing a road. Leeches can show up on lower forest trails.

The upside is lush green valleys and far fewer visitors. If you hate crowds and don't mind drizzle, it's a fair trade.

Spring and winter

Spring, March to May, is the other main high season. Rhododendrons bloom on higher trails, and the Paro Tshechu draws crowds. Mornings can be crisp, and afternoons are pleasant.

Winter is cold but dry and bright. Thimphu is quiet, and you can often have temples nearly to yourself. Some high passes may get snow, and treks like the Snowman Trek aren't open then. Dochula Pass, on the road to Punakha, can give clear Himalayan views on a good morning.

One more thing: Bhutan charges a daily Sustainable Development Fee per visitor, and the rules can change. Check the current setup before you plan around it.
