When to go to Thimphu: a seasonal guide

Autumn and spring: the sweet spots

October and November are our top months for Thimphu. Skies clear after the monsoon, and the air is crisp. November is almost dry, with just one rainy day. Days feel mild, around 17°C, and evenings turn cold enough for a jacket. This is also high season, so rooms fill up and flights into Paro get tight.

Spring is the other good window. March is rated Excellent, though it's wetter than February. By April, showers come most days. They're often short, and the valley turns green. Spring suits you if you want to see rhododendrons and don't mind a damp afternoon.

Winter: quiet and cold

December to February is dry and sunny, with only a few wet days. Days are pleasant at 13 to 15°C. Nights are the problem. They drop close to freezing, and many guesthouses have only basic heating. You'll be glad of a warm room after dinner of ema datshi, the chilli and cheese stew you'll see everywhere.

If you hate crowds, winter is your time. Dechencholing and the Buddha Dordenma statue are calm, and you can wander Centenary Farmers' Market on a weekend without jostling. Treks at higher altitudes may be closed by snow, so stick to day walks near the city, like the Wangditse and Tango routes.

Summer monsoon: green but soggy

From June to September, it rains almost every day. July is the wettest, with rain on all 30 days, and it's also our gloomiest month for sun. Roads can slide in landslides, which delays travel between towns. Clouds often hide the mountains.

Still, it's the cheapest time to come. Valleys glow green and the crowds are thin. If you're happy with museums, like the Folk Heritage Museum and the Textile Museum, and a few hours of drizzle, it can work well.

Festivals through the year

Thimphu Tshechu, a major festival of masked monk dances at Tashichho Dzong, usually falls in September or October. The date follows the lunar calendar, so check it before you book. It's a big draw, and it's why early autumn gets busy. In winter, Thimphu Dromchoe in the early part of the year brings a quieter, more local feel. If you want to see dancers in full costume, aim for autumn.
