Visiting Seoul in June
June weather in Seoul
June feels warm, damp and increasingly rainy. Days can be sticky, especially when you're walking between palaces and shops, but evenings are often more comfortable. Rain falls on about ten days, so showers can interrupt outdoor plans. July is much wetter, while May is cooler and drier.
You'll still have plenty of daylight for a walk along Cheonggyecheon Stream or a visit to Gyeongbokgung Palace. Save flexible time for rainy spells: the National Museum of Korea is a good indoor stop. Hiking up Namsan can be pleasant on a clear day, but muddy paths and humid air make steep trails less appealing after rain.
Events and local life
June 6 is Memorial Day, a public holiday when South Koreans honour those who died in war. Some government offices and businesses close, and you may notice ceremonies or flags around the city. The Seoul Queer Culture Festival is often held in June, though its dates and format can change.
If you hate crowds, avoid central streets around a major festival parade. Otherwise, June is usually quieter than July and August, when school holidays bring more domestic visitors. Hotel rates and flights can also be less costly than in peak summer, though prices vary.
Getting around Seoul in June
Travelling with kids? Pick a palace visit for a dry morning, then keep a museum or café stop in reserve for a sudden shower.
For a local rainy-day meal, duck into Gwangjang Market for bindaetteok, a savoury mung-bean pancake. The market's covered aisles make it easier to browse when the rain starts, and you can warm up over a freshly cooked snack. Check palace hours before you go, since Gyeongbokgung closes on Tuesdays.
