Visiting Seoul in February
February feels like winter
Seoul is still properly cold in February, with highs around 4°C and lows near -5°C. The air can feel sharper in the shade, especially around the open paths of Gyeongbokgung Palace. Rain is limited, so you're more likely to deal with cold than a washout.
You can still enjoy palace visits, cafés in Ikseon-dong and indoor markets such as Gwangjang. For a longer outdoor walk, keep it to a short stretch of the Cheonggyecheon stream, then warm up nearby. A long day outside or a hike up Namsan can feel punishing in the cold.
Holidays and quieter streets
Seollal, the Korean Lunar New Year, sometimes falls in February. If your visit coincides, expect many locals to travel, and some shops and restaurants to close. Museums and palaces may have holiday events, but opening hours can change.
Outside Seollal, February is a quieter, lower-season month than May or October. You'll usually find fewer visitors at Myeongdong's shops and the main palace sights than in spring or autumn. Prices can be gentler, too, though holiday travel may make trains busy.
If you hate crowds, February can suit you—just avoid travelling between cities during Seollal.
Make the cold work for you
Plan your day around warm stops. Browse Namdaemun Market, then sit down for kalguksu, a hot noodle soup, in the nearby market lanes. For a view without a long exposed walk, take the cable car up Namsan and spend less time on the summit paths.
One Seoul-specific tip: use the underground passages around City Hall and Euljiro to get between subway exits and nearby buildings when the wind bites. They're useful links, not a reason to skip the city streets altogether.
