Seoul Weather in December

Cold days, clear plans

December feels properly wintry in Seoul. Days reach about 3°C, while nights fall to -4°C, and the short daylight makes late afternoons feel chilly. Rain is limited, but the cold can make long outdoor visits tiring.

You can still enjoy Gyeongbokgung Palace, Bukchon Hanok Village and the views from N Seoul Tower. Keep outdoor walks short, then warm up in a museum or café. A long picnic by the Han River is less appealing now. November is much milder, while January is colder.

Lights and New Year

Myeongdong's Christmas lights bring a festive feel, and shops around the area make an easy stop after dark. On December 31, crowds gather near Bosingak Bell Pavilion for the New Year bell-ringing ceremony.

If you hate crowds, skip the busy streets around Myeongdong and Bosingak on those evenings. December is generally quieter than May and October, Seoul's best-weather months, so you may find fewer visitors and better-value stays outside the holiday rush. Prices and crowds can rise around Christmas and New Year.

Make the cold easier

Travelling with kids? Keep outdoor sightseeing to a short stretch, then plan a warm indoor stop nearby.

For an easy break, head into the underground shopping arcades around Myeongdong Station. You can warm up, browse and reach nearby streets without staying outside for long. If you're visiting Gyeongbokgung, check the palace's current opening hours before setting out; winter daylight is brief, and a closed gate can mean a chilly wasted walk.
