Cold days at Hwaseong

December feels properly wintry in Suwon. Days reach about 3°C, while nights fall to -4°C, and the short daylight leaves little time for lingering outdoors. Rain is limited, but the cold can make the stone paths around Suwon Hwaseong Fortress feel icy.

You can still explore the fortress and Hwaseong Haenggung Palace, especially when the sun is out. Keep outdoor visits shorter, and save cafés in Haenggung-dong for a warm break. Long walks along the exposed fortress walls are less appealing after dark.

Holidays and crowds

December isn't a major festival month in Suwon. Christmas Day is a public holiday in South Korea, and New Year's Eve brings a festive mood, but don't expect the city's main cultural festival: the Suwon Hwaseong Cultural Festival takes place in autumn.

Visitor numbers are generally lower than in May and October, Suwon's popular travel months. You'll often find a calmer feel at major sights, and accommodation may cost less than during those busier periods. Christmas and New Year can bring more local visitors, though.

Who'll enjoy it

Budget travellers who prefer quieter sights may like Suwon in December, as long as they're comfortable with the cold. Families can enjoy the palace and fortress, but little ones may tire quickly outdoors.

For an easier visit, take the bus or a taxi between Suwon Station and Hwaseong Haenggung, then explore the nearby streets on foot. Try a bowl of sujebi, a local-style dough soup, in Haenggung-dong after your walk. It's a cosy way to warm up without stretching your outdoor plans.
