June: heat meets the monsoon

June is still hot, though it's cooler than May. Days reach 35°C, and nights stay warm around 25°C. Rain falls on 18 days, often making afternoons sticky and skies cloudy. You'll get some dry spells, but don't count on a clear day.

Sightseeing in the city works best between showers. Visit the Tribal Museum or Jagannath Temple, then keep a flexible plan for the rest of the day. For families, indoor stops are easier than trying to fit a full day outdoors. Skip long hikes and avoid getting close to waterfalls after heavy rain; wet paths and strong flows can make them risky.

Events and changing prices

Ranchi's annual Rath Yatra takes place at the Jagannath Temple in Dhurwa. Its date follows the Hindu calendar, so it can fall in June or July. If it coincides with your visit, expect crowds around the temple and local roads.

June is less popular than the cooler November-to-February season, so you'll generally find fewer tourists and lower-season rates. Rain and heat are part of the trade-off. By July, rainfall rises sharply, so June can suit budget travellers who don't mind changing plans when showers arrive.

Getting around in the rain

June brings 195 mm of rain, with about 3.4 hours of sunshine a day. That can leave paths slick and outdoor views hazy. Keep open-air stops such as Rock Garden for a dry spell, rather than squeezing them between showers.

At Hundru Falls, check conditions locally before travelling from Ranchi. Heavy rain can make the approach slippery, and the falls may be rougher than they look from a distance. A taxi or local driver can help you adjust your route if rain slows the roads.
