Best Time to Visit Ranchi

Winter: November to February

This is the best stretch, and it's easy to see why. Days are sunny and dry, and the air feels crisp rather than heavy. Mornings and evenings in December and January get properly cold, with lows around 9–10°C, so you'll want a jacket for early starts. By afternoon it's comfortable for walking.

It suits almost any trip. Ranchi is known as the City of Waterfalls, and Hundru Falls and Dassam Falls are fine to visit now, though the flow is thinner than after the rains. Rock Garden and Kanke Dam are pleasant for slow afternoons. Day trips to Patratu Valley, with its winding road, work well too. This is also high season, so the popular spots fill up on weekends and around Christmas and New Year.

March to May: hot and dry

March is still good, with warm days and cool nights. April and May are another story. Highs reach 38–39°C, and the afternoons are punishing. Sightseeing is best kept to early mornings or after sunset.

May brings the first storms, with rain on about 11 days. They cool things down briefly but don't end the heat. This is low season for visitors, so you'll find quieter streets and easier rooms. Spring also has Holi, usually in March, and Sarhul, a tribal festival welcoming the new year and the sal tree blossoms. Sarhul is a good reason to come in late March or April if you care about local culture. Processions with drums and dancing fill the city.

June to September: monsoon

Be honest with yourself about this one. July and August are the wettest months, with rain on 27 days each. The sun barely shows, and humidity sits close to 90%. Roads can turn muddy, and some trips get cancelled.

There's an upside, though. The waterfalls are at full power, and the hills turn deep green. If you love waterfalls and don't mind getting wet, Hundru Falls is at its loudest now. Just stay back from the edges, since rocks get slippery and currents are strong. Hotels are quiet and cheaper.

October: the sweet spot

October is easy to overlook. The rain has eased to about 9 days, the air is clean, and the hills are still green. The falls still run well. It's also Durga Puja season, and Ranchi's pandals (temporary festival shrines) light up across the city. Expect crowds and packed evenings, but the atmosphere is worth it.

If you want one month, pick October for greenery and festivals, or December for crisp, clear days.
