November to February: the sweet spot

This is the best stretch, and the data agrees. Days are warm to mild, nights are cool, and rain is almost nil. November is the driest, with just 3 mm. December and January are the coldest, with lows around 9–10°C. Mornings by the river can be chilly and foggy, so you'll want a shawl or jacket at dawn on the ghats (the steps leading down to the water).

This is also high season. Magh Mela, a huge month-long gathering of pilgrims on the sandbanks at the Sangam, where the Ganga and Yamuna meet, happens in January and February. Tent towns go up, and the riverbank is busy from first light. Every twelve years the Kumbh Mela is held here, and it's far bigger. Both bring heavy crowds, so rooms fill up fast and prices climb. If you want the Sangam without the crush, go in late November or December. Travelling with kids? Those months are also easiest for walking around Anand Bhawan, Khusro Bagh and Allahabad Fort.

March to June: heat builds

March is fair, with warm days and dry air. Holi, the colour festival, usually lands in March, and the city gets loud and messy in a fun way. After that it heats up fast. April and May are the hottest, with May topping out at 43°C and nights that barely cool down. June is hot too, at 41°C, and the first storms arrive.

If you come now, keep sightseeing to early morning and after sunset. Spend the afternoon indoors. Evening boat rides to the Sangam are far nicer than midday ones. Crowds are thin, and hotels are cheaper.

July to October: monsoon and after

July is the wettest month, with 267 mm falling on 23 days. August and September are nearly as wet and very humid. The river rises, and some ghats can be partly underwater. Skies stay grey, with under 3 hours of sun a day in July. It's quiet and green, but not ideal for walking tours.

October is the turnaround. Rain drops to 37 mm, and the sun comes back. It's warm, a little sticky, and a good pick if you want fewer people before the winter rush. Dussehra and Diwali often fall in October or early November, when the city is lit up and the sweet shops are packed.
