When to go to Jabalpur: a seasonal guide

November to February: the sweet spot

This is the best stretch, and it's easy to see why. Days are warm and sunny, with highs around 27°C in December and January. Nights are cool, and January dips to about 10°C. You'll want a light jacket for early mornings and evenings, especially on a boat ride at Bhedaghat.

Bhedaghat is the big draw. The Narmada River runs through a gorge of white marble cliffs, and boatmen row you through it. The cliffs glow best in clear winter light. The Dhuandhar Falls nearby are good to see in the dry months too, when you can walk around without being soaked. Kanha and Bandhavgarh tiger reserves are a few hours away, and winter is a popular time for safaris. Expect more visitors at Bhedaghat on weekends and over the Christmas and New Year break.

March to May: hot and dry

It heats up fast. March is fair, but April reaches 40°C, and May is the hottest month at 42°C with warm nights near 27°C. The sun is strong and the air is very dry. Afternoons are for staying indoors.

If you come now, plan sightseeing for early morning or after sunset. The Madan Mahal Fort sits on a rocky hill and is better in the cooler hours. Tourist numbers are low, so the sights are quiet. That's a plus if you can handle the heat. Most visitors can't, so we'd skip these months unless you have to travel.

June to September: monsoon

The rains arrive in June and last through September. July is the wettest month, with 417 mm falling on 27 days. August isn't far behind. Humidity is high, skies are grey, and sun is rare. Roads can flood, and some trips get cancelled.

There's an upside. The Narmada swells and Dhuandhar Falls turns thunderous, which is a sight in itself. The hills turn green, and the crowds stay away. If you don't mind wet shoes and changed plans, it can be rewarding. Note that Kanha and Bandhavgarh usually close their core zones for the monsoon, so safaris aren't an option.

October: a good shoulder month

By October the rain has mostly gone, with only 32 mm over five days. It's still humid and the land is lush. Highs sit near 29°C. It's also festival season. Durga Puja and Dussehra bring decorated pandals (temporary shrines) and processions to the city, and Jabalpur's celebrations are lively. Diwali often follows in late October or November, so streets glow with lights. Book trains early around these holidays.
