When to go to Gwalior: a seasonal guide
November to February: the sweet spot
This is the time to go. Days are warm but not harsh, and the skies are mostly clear. Mornings and nights get properly cold in December and January, with lows around 9–10°C. You'll want a jacket when you're up on the walls of Gwalior Fort at sunrise, because the wind there bites.
It's also high season, but Gwalior never gets truly packed. Expect more Indian families around the Christmas and New Year school break. The Jai Vilas Palace and the fort's Man Singh Palace are busiest then. The Gwalior Trade Fair, a big market and cultural fair, usually runs from around late December into February. Tansen Music Festival, honouring the legendary singer Tansen, is typically held in December and draws classical musicians to his tomb. Dates shift each year, so check them before booking.
March to June: heat builds fast
March is fair, with pleasant days and warm evenings. After that it gets tough. April hits 40°C, and May is the hottest month at 43°C, with nights that barely cool, at 28°C. June is just as hot at the start, but it's stickier.
If you must visit now, plan your day around the heat. See the fort and the Sas Bahu temples early, then retreat indoors. The Scindia Museum inside Jai Vilas Palace is a good midday stop. Hotels are quiet and cheaper, because few people choose these months. Holi, the colour festival, usually falls in March and is a lively time to be in town.
July to September: monsoon
July is the wettest month, with 224 mm over 22 days, and August is close behind. It's grey, humid and often muggy. Sun is rare. The fort's lawns and surrounding hills turn green, which looks lovely, but some days you'll be stuck inside.
Rain can also make the fort's steep paths slippery. If you like quiet sights and don't mind showers, this is a low-season option. For most visitors, it's the weakest choice. September is easing off but still damp.
October: the in-between month
October is good, not excellent. It's the sunniest month at 10.7 h a day, with little rain, but afternoons still reach 32°C. Dussehra and Diwali often fall in October or November, so expect festive lights and busy markets around Lashkar, the old city's main market area. It's a good pick if you want fewer crowds than winter and can handle some warmth.
