When to go to Bhopal: a seasonal guide
November to February: the sweet spot
This is when Bhopal is at its best. Days are warm and dry, and the sun is out for most of the day. Nights get properly cool, especially in December and January, when lows drop to about 9–10°C. You'll want a jacket for early mornings by the Upper Lake, but by lunchtime you'll be back in short sleeves.
It's the right time for walking around the Old City, with its Taj-ul-Masajid (one of India's largest mosques) and the busy lanes near Chowk bazaar. Try poha-jalebi for breakfast, a local favourite. It's also the best window for a day trip to the Buddhist stupas at Sanchi, or the rock shelters of Bhimbetka, where you walk a lot in the open. Winter is the busiest season, so expect more visitors at both sites, especially on weekends and over Christmas.
October, March and the hot months
October is a good shoulder month. The rains have mostly gone and it's rated Excellent, though it still feels humid. The land is green, and Sanchi looks lovely. Dussehra often falls in this month, with big Ravana effigies burned in the evenings.
March is still pleasant in the mornings, but afternoons start to bite. By April and May it's very hot, with May reaching 42°C and nights that barely cool off. If you're here then, plan around the heat. Do the Old City early, then spend the afternoon indoors at the Tribal Museum or the Bharat Bhavan arts complex. Both are good, and both are cool. Hotels are quieter and cheaper, because few people choose this time.
June to September: monsoon
The rains arrive in June and peak in July, when it rains on most days and the sky stays grey. August is almost as wet. It's sticky, and you'll often see little sun. Sightseeing in the open becomes a struggle, and rain can wash out trips to Bhimbetka.
Still, there's an upside. The Upper Lake and Lower Lake fill up, the hills turn green, and the crowds thin out. If you like moody weather and quiet streets, you may enjoy it. Just keep your plans flexible and your days short. For most visitors, though, it's the one season to skip.
